The emergence of backpack journalism presents the opportunity for both progress and regression, it just depends on the person carrying the backpack. Yes, backpack journalism demands a lot from the journalist, but what’s wrong with demanding more? The fact that we have a convergence journalism major here at Mizzou gives us the opportunity to learn about all the different platforms of journalism. If the quality of journalists working as backpack journalists is high, this presents an opportunity for journalistic progress. On the other hand, journalists who don’t put in the effort to become masters of each platform could very well cause a regression in the field. Thus, if a regression occurred, it wouldn’t be due to backpack journalism, but the failure of the journalist to keep up with the field.
